The incidence of
autism is increasing at an alarming rate. In California, according to
the California Department of Developmental Services, it is up 273
percent over the last 11 years. Autism is at record levels in the UK,
where one in 110 people - more than half a million - has the condition,
according to the National Autistic Society. Autism Spectrum disorders
currently affects 1 out of 166 children. Although barely covered in the
news, the NIMH finally admitted that autism is an epidemic. Further the
CDC finally admits Autism is a “Greater Danger to Your Children”. Other
reports have added to fears that autism is growing.
Autism is a lifelong
developmental disability affecting learning, verbal and non-verbal
communication and social interaction. A final diagnosis of autism is
made after the child has been evaluated as to communication, behavior
and developmental level usually by a team of specialists. Autism is
considered to be a part of a spectrum disorder that varies in severity
and etiology. Autism is usually first recognized or diagnosed from 18
to 30 months of age. Autism is three to five times more likely to
affect males than females.
Independent research
looking into all possible causes of autism is imperative. A small study
in London in 1998 first raised the possibility that autism is linked to
the MMR vaccine. There is now a growing belief that autism may be a
medically caused catastrophe – with believed ties to vaccine injury,
antibiotic usage and other chemical and pharmacological agents. Autism
is a complex neurological disorder and oxidative imbalance is one
feature of the autistic syndrome. The whole topic of autism is a huge
topic and deserves a careful explanation but it is treatable.
This is important,
so take a moment to consider it: many believe autism is a way of being.
Some even resent treating individuals with Autism thinking that those
of us whom seek treatment, research & recovery are somehow saying there
is something “wrong” with our children. That we are incapable of
accepting and therefore loving our children the way they are.
Personally, I think this is pure hogwash! As a good mother, I only want
my children to be the healthiest and best they are capable of being –
Autistic or not. I personally believe Inside a child with autism very
well could lay the next genius. Autism is no longer considered a rare,
stigmatized disorder; it's one that touches the lives of an increasing
number of individuals worldwide.
